The natural lake Pressegger See – affectionately called “bathtub of the valley Gailtal” – waits for you right in front of your door. Its water runs down from the surrounding mountains. Thus, it is of a great quality. That’s why the motto is: “Swimming in drinking water”! With water temperatures up to 28°C in summertime, it is one of Austria’s warmest swimming lakes, so that you’re promised to have a great time swimming – especially since you have free admission to all lidos. The lake is an oasis for recreation for everyone from swimmers, divers, fishermen and surfers to those looking for a refreshment after a mountain or cycling tour.

The Carnic bicycle route runs through the whole Gailtal valley - at a distance from main roads and along fields and lawns. Along the trail you will find not only interesting landmarks but also many service areas that await you with culinary delicacies. If you just want to gone one stretch of a round tour, you can do the rest with the Gailtal train (Villach – Kötschach)

The bike rental outlet “Rudolph” is located only 5 km from the Pfeiferhouse. Here, you will find the right bike for you.

You love to shoulder your backpack and tie your hiking shoes? Then, about 400 km of marked hiking trails of all levels of difficulty will guarantee you the excitement you are looking for. Themed hiking trails reveal a lot about the uniqueness of the holiday region Gailtal valley. Mountaineers have the choice between numerous mountains of two thousand metres in the Carnic and Gailtal Alps. Inexperienced mountaineers reach their goal as well with the help of secured fixed rope routes.

The beautiful landscape offers everything you need for hiking: high mountains, mountain pastures, impressive ravines, wide valleys, and plateaus with a glorious view of the alpine world of the Carnic and Gailtal Alps.

In a 20-minute drive you reach Waidegg, market town of Kirchbach, where an 18-hole championship golf course is located.

Spreading over 70 ha with wide and mostly even fairways, these facilities allow you to achieve great scores. An extensive area of ponds is set up in the middle of the course. Special concentration and precision is needed for the island green on course 7.

The Wilson-Staff-training grounds with a 6-hole-training course (par 3) of 50.000 m², a pitching and chipping area of more than 10.000 m², a putting green of 920 m² and a 270 m long driving range makes it possible for everyone to improve their handicap or even start golfing.

Whether standing or flowing – the waters of the region are a paradise for fishermen. The water of lake Peessegger See and lake Weissensee has drinking water quality, so that one can fish there without limitations. If you prefer fishing in flowing waters, you can choose between the river Gail, the brook Garnitzenbach and the brook Zerimbach. These rivers are about 50 km long. The Gail is known to great for fly fishing.

The adventure of “canyoning“ is one of the special offers in the valley Gailtal. Equipped with a wetsuit and a helmet and led by an experience guide, you hike through the canyons and gorges of the region.

The wild waters of the valleys Gailtal and Lesachtal have always been a popular destination for rafters and canoeist. Here, they can prepare their next rafting trip with the help of professional rafters and enjoy the beautiful landscape along the course of the river Gail.

Geology on the Geotrail

 

Only 365 million years ago, Gardnerkofel, Kammleiten and Garnitzenklamm formed a coral reef. When the Devon-ocean started to vanish, thousands of metres of thick corals, mussels and sea lily banks were lifted and formed these impressive mountains and gorges. At almost no other place in the world, the structure of the Devon’s riffs can be experienced like in the Carnic Alps. Quite a lot of geologists from all over the world pilgrimage to this place. You can sort of wander through the layers of prehistory. Information boards explain the visible formation of the valley Gailtal to interested visitors. 500 million years of history can by experience on five different Geotrails.

The longest toboggan- rin in Carinthia!
