View of the valley Gailtal

The valley Gailtal

The valley Gailtal, named after the river Gail, extends from eastern Tirol to Carinthia alongside the Italian/Austrian border. It ends near Villach where the river Gail flows into the river Drau in the town of Maria Gail. Especially the contrast between the even, wide valley and the sometimes jagged mountain slopes make the valley Gailtal so attractive. In the north, the valley is skirted by the Lienz Dolomites of and the Gailtal Alps. In the south, it is skirted by the Carnic Alps and the Karawanks.
